Thank you! Rashbatz was born in the city of Szventzian, in the county of Vilna. His father spent all his time in the Beis Hamedrash, never engaging in any business, while his mother headed the household and earned their livelihood. His father was a very G-d-fearing person, the descendant of a distinguished family. Though he was a Misnaged, he heeded the prohibition against slander, and never spoke ill of the Chassidic cult. He died before the age of fifty, leaving Rashbatz an orphan. There\’s a very detailed story of how the Rashbatz discovered the ways of the Chassidim and their path in serving Hashem. But what made the Rashbatz drawn to the Chasidim were two outstanding characteristics which he discerned in them. First, their great humility: they treated each other as equals. No one attempted to assume the leadership over others, and they were always in complete agreement and harmony. Second, their attachment to the Creator: they were wholly devoted to Him and His Torah, even while they conducted business. For example, Reb Yitzchak, the tailor, would always repeat words of Torah as he worked. Even their merchants were always discussing Torah as they traded in the marketplace, and this impressed him very much. After discovering the Chassidim, the Rashbatz decided to investigate further how they conducted their lives in serving Hashem. And after examining their approach, he would decide which path he would choose for himself. He decided to begin by studying the way they prayed. After arriving at the shul of the Chassidim, he stood there for more than an hour, emotionally overcome by the fervent sounds of their prayers, which were recited aloud and were accompanied by weeping. Unable to control himself, he went inside and found the chazzan standing at the lectern and reciting, Yours, O L-rd, is the greatness. This was accompanied by great excitement and much weeping, while the chazzan beat his forehead with his fists. They all davened together, with great Deveikus and devotion. At the core of his being, Rashbatz realized that they were following the proper path and that their form of prayer was acceptable before the Holy One blessed be He. He observed that several Chassidim became completely oblivious to all physical reality while davening, even forgetting where they were. Their emotional involvement reached its peak during the blessings of Kerias Shema. Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna earned the title as the Vilna Gaon for he was a genius in Torah and was able to grasp profound concepts and ideas. Rabbi Eliyahu\’s great abilities began to show at a very early age. At the age of seven, he gave his first public discourse and displayed a fully developed intellect. By the time he was ten, he had advanced to the point where he no longer needed a teacher. Despite efforts on his part to hide his great righteousness and phenomenal knowledge, he was soon famed as a great tzadik (righteous man) and Torah scholar. At the age of 35, he was approached by one of the leading sages of that time, Rabbi Yonason Eybschutz, to act as an intermediary in the conflict between him and another great sage, Rabbi Yakov Emden. To the Gaon, Limmud HaTorah (the study of Torah) was of paramount importance, and this ethic was fully displayed on his part. His diligence in learning was unsurpassable. The Gaon\’s son testified that for fifty years his father did not sleep for more than two hours in a twenty-four hour period. His breadth of knowledge was amazing. He was capable of stating from memory the number of times any sage was mentioned in any particular book of the Talmud. His knowledge of both the revealed and the hidden parts of the Torah was beyond compare. The Gaon considered secular education to be a vital adjunct to Torah study. He was knowledgeable in almost all secular fields and authored books on grammar and mathematics.
